Alana and Josh’s Vibrant Maximalist Wedding
Some weddings are designed to be quiet and understated, and others are designed to be a full-blown celebration of life, love, and colour. Alana and Josh’s wedding was vibrantly and unapologetically the latter. Held at Alloway Hall in downtown Winnipeg, this was a day bursting with energy, engaging details, and an explosion of joyful colour. It was a masterclass in maximalism, blending classic elements with fun, funky, and modern design choices for a celebration that was as unique and spirited as the couple themselves.
The day was filled with playful wave stationery, a stunning multi-course dinner from the brilliant Chef Ben Kramer, and one of the most energetic dance parties we have ever witnessed. Today, we are absolutely buzzing to share all the details of this incredible day, with every vibrant moment captured perfectly by the talented team at Sierra Savannah Photography. Get ready to be inspired by a wedding that truly dared to be different.
The Vision: Energetic, Fun, and Full of Colour
From the very beginning, Alana and Josh’s vision was clear: they wanted a party. They wanted a day that felt engaging, full of life, and completely authentic to their fun-loving personalities. This vision translated into a modern and eclectic design, using a bold and fearless colour palette. Bright emerald greens, deep blues, vibrant oranges, sunny yellows, and rich purples came together to create a visual feast.
For Alana’s bouquet, she wanted a statement piece that reflected this maximalist theme. We worked with Beyond Flowers to create a large, imperfectly perfect, colour-blocked bouquet. It was brimming with premium blooms like peonies, dancing orchids, and ranunculus, with dramatic dripping amaranthus adding texture and movement. It was the perfect accessory for a bride ready to embrace colour and fun.
The Ceremony: A Colourful Vow Exchange
Guests were welcomed into the ceremony space with a glass of sparkling wine, setting a celebratory tone from the very start. The ceremony was set against the large windows of Alloway Hall, with elegant draping concealing the reception bars and creating a soft, beautiful backdrop. Live musicians performed as the couple and their wedding party made their way down the aisle, filling the space with beautiful, intimate music.
Alana and Josh exchanged their vows in front of a stunning, statement floral installation. Rather than a traditional arch, they opted for vibrant, modified arrangements set on clean white pedestals, bursting with bright oranges, yellows, pinks, and rich greenery. This modern take on a ceremony backdrop framed the couple perfectly, adding a powerful pop of colour without overwhelming the intimacy of the moment.
The Cocktail Hour: A Chic and Funky Lounge
Immediately following the ceremony, the real fun began! Alana and Josh kicked off the cocktail hour with a celebratory sparkling wine and Aperol pour, personally handing out the colourful cocktails to their guests. This personal touch was a perfect reflection of their roles as gracious hosts.
The middle section of the ballroom was transformed into a chic lounge, bar area, and photo-op space. This is where we truly leaned into the maximalist theme. Deep blues and emerald greens popped against the white gallery walls and crisp linens. We mixed elegant and funky decor elements, creating a lounge area that was both stylish and inviting. To keep the vibe energetic and sophisticated, a live saxophone player accompanied the DJ, filling the room with soulful tunes. The bar itself was a focal point—a striking, colourful structure set against a black shelving backdrop that was both functional and a piece of art.
The Reception: A Feast for the Eyes
The design goal for the reception was to create an interesting and unique seating arrangement that celebrated colour, pattern, and texture. A mix of long rectangular tables and round tables framed the dance floor, adding dynamism to the floor plan. We prioritized high-impact rental items, including chairs, linens, napkins, cutlery, and glassware, to create a striking look that didn’t detract from the bold focal points of the bar and dance floor.
The tables needed to remain functional for the family-style meal and endless toasts, so we kept the centrepieces charming and streamlined. The tables were adorned with thrifted bud vases, each holding a few colourful blooms, interspersed with modern table lamps and battery-powered candles that cast a warm, inviting glow. The black and white checkered dance floor was a genius move, grounding the explosion of colour on the tables and pairing perfectly with the black bars across the room.
The Party: An Unforgettable Dance Party
As dinner concluded, the celebration shifted into high gear. Alana and Josh chose to forgo a plated dessert, instead treating guests to an incredible sweets table filled with all their favourite goodies. A stunning fringe ceiling installation and a classic disco ball were installed over the dance floor, creating a true party atmosphere.
The DJ booth was set on a black stage, becoming a focal point at the north end of the gallery. As the night went on, an additional 40 guests arrived for the late-night portion of the party, which featured an incredible DJ set by Alana’s own brother. It was, without a doubt, one of the most packed and energetic dance floors we have ever seen, a true testament to the couple’s love for a good time.
Alana and Josh’s vibrant maximalist wedding was a joy to plan from start to finish. Their willingness to embrace bold choices and prioritize a fun, engaging atmosphere for their guests resulted in a day that was uniquely them. We wish them a lifetime of love, laughter, and many more amazing parties.
